. . . as I breathed in and out of my mouth for an entire hour and a half, I was laughing with such bliss that the vibrations spread in the entire room as all 30 of us breathed in and out without a pause. It took another hour before my body was able to shift out of the tightness in my extremities and wow, I was buzzing with sensations I hadn’t felt before . . . it was the beginning of a whole new adventure for me.
The Italians, Nico and Lucia (see Global Friends in www.wisdomwithinus.com), were facilitating the Breathwork experience in 2002 at the Center I opened only months before in Thailand and this was a workshop that I was very thankful for as I trusted in engaging fully with the purity of this experience.
The theory is that when breathing in and out of the mouth without a pause, the breath forces stagnation in the cells (emotional blocks) to be pushed out of the core and although we are conscious of every sensation, we feel emotions leaving the body and there is no need to hold on to any of the stories, we simply breathe through the emotional reaction and it’s gone; layer by layer. How do we store emotions in the body in the first place? Often when shocking situations occur (where we hold our breath), or we don’t breathe in our daily lives, we build up the blocks in our physical cells (which are simply thought patterns bouncing in and out) and this creates dis-ease (not at ease) in the body. Of course as I mentioned before in other articles, drinking plenty of water and breathing helps us clean this stagnation.
After the session, Nico also explained to me that Breathwork can be done in the ocean with a mask and snorkel. Because I had been a Divemaster in my 20’s in Vancouver, my knowledge was that when we breathe in through the snorkel we should exhale out double the time so that we do not have a carbon dioxide build-up in the dead space of the snorkel . . . Nico reminded me to clear my mind of that thought pattern and trust that when we breathe in and out of the snorkel, this was not the case. So, as I received and trusted, we went into the ocean and as we lay face down on the surface of the water (should be fairly calm and not big waves!), cradled by a partner holding us for support, we each did about an hour of breathwork.
It was such a different sensation in the water, as this is the place where we were in our mother’s womb, in water. Doing Breathwork in the “air” atmosphere was much more intense then in the water. My body became pure oneness and my visions were simply white light and I could feel myself as a dolphin. At the time I figured I must’ve been a dolphin once before, but still to this day, it doesn’t really matter what it is, it just IS and the expansiveness of being a lightbody was incredible . . . the only word is bliss . . . but there must be a more powerful word to describe this light/love bliss . . . if I find the words, I’ll let you know!
After this initiation in to Breathwork, I practiced each day in my home and every week a group of us met in the ocean and practice there as well. The visions became profound as I had could see my “sources” and so many energies come and touch my heart with their hands. I remember crying with bliss during this time. Now, after so many years of experiencing all these layers, tears do not come anymore . . . I simply go into a space of such pure bliss that tears of bliss or sadness don’t seem to be there anymore . . . it’s like another layer so deep clears out all of the tears. I use Breathwork to feel every organ as well and go deep inside. I have asked my liver a few times what is creating it’s heaviness and I get clear visions and then it’s done!
As I traveled for the next 3 years in Russia, Asia and Europe, I was often alone in rooms and hotels and this was a perfect time to explore and play with Breathwork (I was also exploring alivEmotion movement of shifting patterns and emotional energies as well). One night, in the outskirts of Moscow at the country spa studio, I decided to do Breathwork standing up (I slept in a room in the spa, so when we closed, I was alone to explore!). I breathed in and out for 3 hours! The sensations were so much different then lying down and it felt like all the blood went to my feet and after an hour, my body only wanted to stand in the Tai Chi tree pose. I had taken Tai Chi Chu’an classes at the Center in Thailand and experienced standing this way many times, but now, in this moment in Moscow, I wanted to move in the alivEmotion ways, but my body’s vibrations put me right back in to the tree pose. It was indescribable! At one point, the weight in my feet was so intense that I decided I’d better lie down, as fear started to trigger that maybe Breathwork is only supposed to be done lying down and I started to doubt this exploration in that moment! So I shifted my position after about 2 hours and the last hour continued breathing and vibrating. That night, at 3 am, I released everything in my intestines. What a cleansing . . . what moves, moves!!!
If you want to experience Breathwork, try it out for about 10 mins. Lie down on the floor and breathe in and out of your mouth without a pause. This is not hyperventilation, it is taking in the breath and filling your core. Expand your ribs opposed to lifting your shoulders. My intentions are to breathe in pure white light and exhale whatever wants to leave. The initial sensation is tingling on your cheeks and the back of your head. The arms and legs begin to tighten and what I like to do is move my arms and legs, or shake them so that they do not contract so much. You choose what feels good, but if you start to tighten, it’s okay, trust it! Breath cannot hurt you. What is happening is that the breath is accumulating in the core and leaving the extremities to push out the emotional stuff in the cells. If you meet someone who does Breathwork, you may want to experience it with them first before doing it alone, or have a friend or partner join you and guide you through the breath. I actually breathe with the clients when I give Breathing Bliss sessions, so it’s okay to be sitting and doing it! Have fun and play and send us your stories of how it felt!
